The work was a continuation of the Mission/Task Analysis (MTA) effort performed
by Sikorsky Aircraft (SAC) Crew Systems Integration (CSI) group during Risk
Reduction Phase II (RRII) of the Heavy Lift Replacement (HLR) program (May,
2006).
The original intent of this effort was to build on the previous baseline task
analysis work as documented in Risk Reduction Phase II (HLR Risk Reduction II,
Mission and Task Analysis Final Report, Crew Systems Integration Group, Sikorsky
Aircraft Company, 5 May 2006) to address DID DI-HFAC-81399B attributes across
crew task lists. The referenced work focused on interviews with flight crews and
tasks related to Troop Commanders.
The Human Factors Engineering (HFE) team, consisting of three contractor human
factors engineers from TG O’Brien & Associates Inc. (TGO), were joined by a
human factors engineer from NAVAIR Human Research and Engineering Division and a
training subject matter expert from NAVAIR Advanced Systems Branch (Training).
As in previous MTA efforts, the HFE team focused on understanding the aircraft,
comparing and contrasting the CH-53E missions with projected task requirements
of the HLR, and related crew problem areas rather than identifying a
second-by-second, detailed mission timeline with numerous specific cognitive and
ergonomic criteria for each task element, for either the legacy or future HLR
aircraft. TGO employed tools and methods including task analysis, operator and
maintainer surveys; surveys were administered on site at Cherry Point USMC Air
Station, NC and included data collection, data analysis, and reporting.
